The Center for Workers’ Rights (CWR) regretfully conveys our disappointment in Governor Newsom’s vetoing of AB 2847, California’s Safety Net For All bill. AB 2847 would have extended unemployment insurance benefits to all workers regardless of immigration status. This pandemic has brought to light many disparities, especially for immigrant communities who build up our state’s workforce, hold essential jobs, and contribute to our economic vitality. On top of that many undocumented immigrants pay taxes into systems that they are excluded from in times of need.
One of the most difficult, but sadly frequent, conversations the CWR team had to have at the onset of the pandemic was to explain to workers without authorization to work that they were not eligible for unemployment insurance. While mutual aid organizations and the Governor’s Disaster Relief for Immigrants program provided one time payments to those in severe financial hardship, those efforts paled in comparison to the weekly benefits provided by the unemployment insurance system. Should another economic downturn occur, Governor Newsom’s veto means that these workers will once again be left without sufficient support.
Though this setback is a disappointment, the Center for Workers’ Rights will continue its fight to defend all workers, especially the most vulnerable. Our free-of-cost services are available to low-wage workers across the state.
